Our third performance of the season, Reclaiming Space, is a powerful musical exploration of identity, resilience, and empowerment. This program shines a spotlight on historical struggles and cultural legacies, celebrating those who have dared to stand up, break barriers, and claim their rightful place in the world. By pairing fierce contemporary tributes and vibrant global rhythms alongside classic band heritage, the concert highlights the transformative power of taking up space—both on the stage and in society.
The concert opens with Omar Thomas’ explosive and triumphant A Mother of a Revolution!, a hard-hitting, disco-infused celebration honoring the bravery of trans women of color who sparked the Stonewall Riots. The tone shifts to lush reflection with Chris Pilsner’s deeply moving Dum Spiro Spero ("While I breathe, I hope"), offering a soul-stirring moment that centers on human grace and perseverance. The program then steps into classic American band tradition with John Philip Sousa’s Hands Across the Sea, projecting a spirit of international unity and fellowship.
The second half surges with high-stepping energy through Robert Lowden’s Dixieland Jam, showcasing the improvisational roots and bold spirit of early jazz. The program culminates in Valerie Coleman’s evocative masterwork Roma, a rich, rhythmic tribute to the global journey and enduring heritage of the Romani people as told through the hearts of Romani women. Reclaiming Space promises a thought-provoking, inspiring afternoon of music that honors the strength it takes to make one's voice heard.
