Timothy Smith
Associate Conductor
Timothy Smith is a semi-retired music teacher with more than 30 years of experience teaching elementary through graduate school students. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Murray State University, a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education from George Mason University. While pursuing his Ph.D., Dr. Smith was named a Presidential Scholar and served as a research assistant. He also helped to write a Master of Music Education degree curriculum to make it attainable as a traditional program or as an online and summers-only program and helped design online content for that program.
As a public school music teacher, Dr. Smith's concert bands, marching bands, and jazz bands consistently received top ratings and positive reviews from distinguished adjudicators and artists, including Alfred Reed, Eric Osterling, James Swearingen, David Holsinger, Wynton Marsalis, Gordon Goodwin, and Maynard Ferguson. As an administrator in the Princeton City School District, he managed 15 certified and classified staff and a six-figure budget in the delivery of a comprehensive music program focused on providing access to high-quality music education opportunities for all students. His excellence in teaching was recognized in 2001 when he received the First District Kentucky Music Educators Association Award for Middle School Music Teacher of the Year and in 2007 when he received the Princeton City School District High School Teacher of the Year Award. At the collegiate level, Dr. Smith taught athletic bands, jazz band, general education courses, music education courses, and supervised student teachers.
As a trumpet player, Dr. Smith has performed with various regional and national orchestras and bands, including the Paducah Symphony Orchestra, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Brass Band, American Festival Pops Orchestra, and a national tour with the Jack Daniel's Silver Cornet Band. He is currently a member of the Alte Kameraden German Band and is principal trumpet for the National Concert Band of America and the Manassas Symphony Orchestra. As an advocate for music as a lifelong avocation, he has been active in community music for most of his life, performing with community groups everywhere he has lived. Dr. Smith is an active freelance performer, conductor, and clinician based in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC area, where he lives with his wife, Kristin, and their son, Jacob.
